After 4 years of suffering gout attacks? in the ankle ( one flare up a year)., my gP and I decided on starting on allupurinol about 3 months ago. Starting on 100ml then 200ml finally rising to 300mg after 3 weeks. No gout flares during this period ; after 1 week at 300mg had first flare up in ankle, then I have had a severe flare up every 8 days in the ankle for the last six weeks. My uric acid level during this period has been 2.4-3.0.

I am very concerned about how long this frequency will persist as I have had more gout flare ups whilst on 300mg of allupurinol than I had in the previous 3 years without treatment.

As a person who has been on allipurinol for about 6 weeks, but only been on the 300 level for 2.5 weeks, here is my experience:

    ?

    1) bad flare up when went from 100-200, and 200-300

    2) since been on 300, have had a lot of “wannabe” flare ups where my knees wil swel, but at a lot lesser level than before

    3) most of the small pains in the foot, wrist, and even neck have dissapeared.

    4) the site of my bad flare ups (Right Ankle, Right foot, left and right knees) feel warm and tingly regularly, but have not increased to the pain level of the past.

    5) im still vegeetarian (have been for 8 weeks), but just started yesterday adding chicken into my diet every other day, and will hopefully gradually add the other meats as well)

    ?

    My questions:

What are your experiences on time frames for allipurinol to work, Im definately better, but far from my usual activity level..ie, i can walk, but there is no way i could go for a jog right now, it would be too painful

    ?

Once you have been on the allipurinol, is your experience a pain free life??? how about the lifestyle of diet and alchohol while on the allipurinol, do you drink beer and eat meat?

    ?

Have any of you experienced full blown flare ups while on the CORRECT dose of allipurinol, Im religious about this stuff, and will never miss a dose, Im happy to be on it the rest of my life if it works,

    ?

    Thanks for the help.
