GP, this is absolutely NO criticism of your action to close the topic, on the contrary.
I am only saddened that ONE person can cause it.
During all the time that I have been a member of your forum (~6 months), I remember that only three or four people were admonished or told to leave. With a membership of almost 1000 persons and the multitude of diverse gout topics and the number of posts presented, I dare say, that that is an incredible achievement, an indisputable proof of your integrity and a very high standard of the people who have joined and/or contributed to your success, especially zip2play, trev and many more.
The main reason I am addressing this topic is the fact that I would prefer to see the water issue being discussed further. I, and I am sure others, have learned things, facts, fictions, etc. about water and consumption, affects and consequences which I did not know.
Besides water, many other items/issues were brought to our attention and discussed (even if/when they were not directly related to gout, but indirectly pointed to some gout-related issues), if it weren't for some gouties who took the time and effort to investigate.
To just give one recent example in my experience: When I mentioned something about my mead, honey and sugar related consumption and the Manuka Honey (which, btw, is doing its healing job on my 6 open/closed holes on my right foot), a person, indirectly, on this forum, pointed out the negative effects of “fructose” (part of the various sugars.) This lead me to investigate Manuka Honey further which in turn brought me to a presentation by a doctor who was performing research on the subject of fructose (which he called “plain poison”.)
I spent 1 1/2 hours listening to his presentation to learn things which I had observed but not understood or been properly explained to me. And somewhere down the line, after about 1 hour of listening about the effects of fructose on the human body, particularly, the young ones (obesity and diabetes) he pointed out the extent of which fructose can and will have in the production of uric acid with consequences of gout.
(In case anyone is interested, here is the URL of the presentation:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v…..r_embedded )
As we all know, zip2play, has been particularly prolific with gout related information, while I have been prolific in saying something (or nothing for some.)

https://gout-pal.com/gout-p…..bbc/#p6424
Further, my whole point was, apropo Gout, was that too much water may be somewhat counterproductive, apart from urine output going high, coupled with the need to keep levels up with age.
Zip followed up with a good overview on the throughput process which backed this up.
Blood volume is controlled ONLY by sodium concentration. It is held constant in a very narrow range. Something like a 20% swing from the norm will cause coma or death. The body holds this concentration an unwavering constant with an iron determination.
Therefore Sodium intake is as important as water. Also diuretics come into the picture for gouties.
Now the post has been turned off due to a poster misreading well intended content , I was not going to resurrect this important topic, feeling rather deflated by all this.
Further, I wasn't aware the BBC put blocks on foreign listeners- but in any case I gave a round up of the main points as I saw them of interest to people trying get water intake right. This is very much a gouty thing!
I hope discussion can proceed under our usual gentlemanly rules..

I hope so, too.
I could listen to the broadcast, but no sexy pictures, so I gave up after 10 minutes.
However, your summary kept me in the loop and interested. And Zip's additional info got me even more interested since WATER, SODIUM, (POTASSIUM SUBSTITUTE), SAUNA, and GOUT are closely intertwined in my life. I, for one, would most definitely like to know more about this issue, if anybody else has any thing to contribute.

There's some really novel angles on water facts that are worth persisting with.
This very important for Gout management. – I posted it initially as many on here are into body work, training etc. and being laid up with Gout the attendant slow muscle wastage will automatically start the drift to dehydration, as a matter of course. [4:1 trade down in water retention capabilities]
I've been out of commission for regular exercise for almost 3 months now and notice the run down- I need to get back fitter again, but as we know, the body won't be rushed.

Here's the common scenario…hans you can back me up since we both did our bout with Atkins to our regret.
Water is recommended to do this that or the other…yes it is necessary for ALL bodily functions. So then the “Water is good” mantra becomes “MORE water is good” and then somebody will run with the “AS MUCH AS YOU CAN GET DOWN” ball. This will be repeated ad infinitum on the web and you will have people unhappy if they haven't gotten down their 3 gallons of water in a day. This is NOT hyperbole, but rather common on the Atkins boards. So the feeling becomes that no matter HOW MUCH water you have consumed, it isn't enough. Then the purists will weigh in with “You cannot count coffee. tea, soda, soup, juices, etc,” even though they are all 99% water.
By extension then, the “water is all” thinking will be extended to all disease processes…and then the distilled water people will weigh in.
Yes dehydration is bad…but then so is drowning. In 200,000 years, modern mankind has developed an exquisite sense of thirst. Evolution has gotten man to the premiere spot in nature…not for nothing.

They had been told that if they must take the drug, then they should drink a lot of water. In some cases they drank so much (especially after sweating while dancing) that they literally overdosed on water and died. Ironically, it wasn't the ecstacy that did the damage, but water.
I guess you need to drink a huge amount before that becomes a problem for most though. I like to go to the gym and can sweat like a horse whilst there. After, I always need to drink pints of water to rehydrate – never been a problem for me. In fact, it seems to me that your body gets used to having good levels of water put into it. If I don't drink water I get thirsty quite quickly. Always amazes me how little some people seem to drink; in my view most people should drink more. (Water that is, perhaps not beer )

Thank you, Trev. I just DID listen to the water tape. Yes, it was well worth it.
The comments/advice given, confirmed that I had done pretty good in the past with avoiding dehydration or hyponatremia. However, it also told me that my “replenishing” of salty fluids during my 45 minute sauna relaxation periods, by swigging 3-4 bottles of my 5-7% “Hans in New Mexico Stout” and 1-3 glasses of wine with dinner right afterwards, wasn't the schmartest way to go. I am not going to talk about other details of my life style.
(I have mentioned someplace else that Mother Nature did what no one else was able to do: Pay me back for my arrogance by telling my doctor that I will not give up my homebrews and wine, beside a few other things. She, just quietly, increased my uric acid/MSU with only a few 3-5 days gout attacks over some 20 years till She had it and then used a sledge hammer and it has been pounding me for the last 8 months.)

Zip, fortunately, (and here, just once in my life, did my arrogance do me some good) I refused my doctor's advice/recommendation, to go on the Atkins diet. I have friends here who are on that diet, so every-so-often I do get to eat an Atkins dinner which I don't mind, since it is only once or twice a month. While I, most certainly, would not mind to eat a juicy porterhouse steak or gobble down a 1/2 lb of shrimp or a crabb leg or a big slice of liver with bacon and onions once a week (is anybody's mouth starting to Water?, I am only dreaming about that now.
