ParticipantHi there,
?
Over the past few years I have suffered gout attacks. I would say I get them around twice a year and have been helped with anti-inflammatory drugs. After my last attack my Dr suggested I start taking Allopurinol but the thought of taking a drug for the rest of my life does not appeal. During the chat he also pointed out some lumps on my ears are likely to be caused by gout. Just recently one of the lumps swelled to the surface of the upper part of my ear and contained some awful white chalky paste-like goo. Is this tophi?
?
So really I'm looking for some advice as to take the prescription or just manage an acute attack with NIADS.
?
I am 39, slightly over weight and enjoy a drink of cider, other than that I do not eat or drink anything that is normally associated with gout.
?
Thanks guys.

ParticipantDon't delay any longer. Read as much as you can on this forum & you'll understand why. There is noting to fear from taking Allo, quite the opposite in fact.

You got a pretty soild diagnosis with that burst tophus. Some of us have to play more of a guessing game.

Don't fear allopuinol for life, it is among the most innocuous of drugs.
