Greetings all.  I'm a 36 year old male and have been suffering with gout attacks since I was 21 years old.  I'm having an attack right now after having one just 2 weeks ago.  My attacks seem to be getting more and more frequent.

I was going to start taking AlloP but thought I'd try a more natural approach and ordered a product from goutcure.com.  After about 3 days of taking the stuff I got this attack. (refuse to call it a “flare up” because, as you all know, it's a downright ATTACK!)  Do any of you have any experience with this product?  Anything good or bad to say about it?  I was just scared of the side effects of the AlloP after my doctor told me about all the blood work I'd have to get done.  The stuff sounds downright nasty for my liver and kidneys.  But, I CAN'T TAKE THIS PAIN ANYMORE!  It's ruining my life and seriously making me depressed!  From what I've been reading here it seems a lot of you are having great success with AlloP.

I've been going to the gym for the past month (when the gout allows me to) and have been making very big changes to my diet.  Eating a lot less meat of all types, eating tons more veggies and fruits, drinking 3 liters of water and limiting myself to 1 or 2 beers a day.  Thought I was doing good, but apparently not.

Honestly though, I think doing squats and calf raises with heavy weights triggered this attack I'm having now.  It's so damned frustrating!  I'm trying to do good stuff for myself and it seems to just spit in my face.  It seems like I had fewer attacks with a sedentary lifestyle! Confused

Sorry for ranting, I'm seriously “going insane” though!  LOL!  Anyway, hello all and I'm glad to be here with you.  Glad to see I'm not alone. (that really sounds selfishly morbid when you think about it Laugh)  My friends and co-workers just don't understand.  They have that “just suck it up you wuss” attitude.  They have no idea how much pain I'm in.  It's really affecting my work attendence too.  Makes me nervous you know.  Had to stay home today and my paid time of has dwindled to nothing.

    This sucks… Yell

That's like bargaining with a knife weilding mugger who's just taken your wallet ” just leave me $50 for a cab ride home and a take-away?”

You haven't realised the severity of the situation facing you yet. Don't feel too bad though, we've all done it. It takes a while to come to terms with the extent of the lifestyle changes you need to make if you're going to try and make it without meds. Maybe you should think about that some more?

    So stop doing it

We know what you mean – welcome to the forum

Don't sound much like friends to me

So you understand what's at stake here, unless you get with the programme. Sorry for the tough love, but 15 yrs without getting to grips with the problem is too long dude

I agrre with Odo's advise about long-term treatment, but when I'm at the “I CAN'T TAKE THIS PAIN ANYMORE!” stage I've found that prednisone can reduce the pain starting in a few hours and in two days I'm walking much better.  (Others has used colchicine)

You are absolutely right, Odo.  I will be the first to admit that I like to live in a world of denial.  I don't know how to explain it, but something has just clicked in my head.  It's like I have finally woken up to face the music.

It's VERY hard for me to give up the things that make me feel good.  Drinking, smoking, eating giant steaks and sitting around playing video games.  But, alas, it is time…

However, I was only diagnosed with gout about 3 years ago.  I can't tell you how many ER and urgent care doctor's I went through until one FINALLY got it right.  Until then, I had never even heard of gout.  Most were testing me for STD's, fluid in my knees, and taking xrays to look for joint damage.  See, mine started in my knees and not in my toes like most people.  I guess they just figured I was way too young for it to be anything else.  One, bless her heart, finally ordered blood tests for me and sure enough, my uric acid level was about 8mg/dl.  She said, “You have gout.”  She prescribed me Indocin and Colchicine and the pain subsided.

So, all I can do is move forward.  But the web is verconfusing about what to eat and what not to eat.  One website will tell you to stay away from something when the very next website will say it's OK to eat.Confused  It's very baffling.  For example, I've read I have to stay away from whole grains?  Seriously?  Whole grains?!  Isn't that one of the healthiest things you can eat?  You're seriously telling me to eat white bread instead?!  And what about slamon?  I love salmon and really don't want to have to give that up!

I am going to start taking the AlloP after this attack subsides.  Is it 1 week or 2 weeks after an attack you have to wait to start?  I've already had the preliminary bloodwork done to make sure my liver and kidneys are in good shape and everything looks great.  The script is ready to be filled.

Are you my long-lost brother?  Tons of similarities between your case and mine.  I can't type too much right now as I'm going through a very painful wrist/hand attack.  Fun times, indeed.  I have been keeping a blog with daily updates and a spreadsheet of pertinent information.

    http://goutactiveperson.blogspot.com/

It pretty much says everything about my case.  Your lifestyle will have to change drastically if you want to control your gout – (says the guy who's gone through two bad attacks in two weeks now).  Prednisone can work wonders, though.

No more typing for me.  Ouch!
